On red shifs in the transition region and corona
We present evidence that transition region red-shifts are naturally produced
in episodically heated models where the average volumetric heating scale height
lies between that of the chromospheric pressure scale height of 200 km and the
coronal scale height of 50 Mm. In order to do so we present results from 3d MHD
models spanning the upper convection zone up to the corona, 15 Mm above the
photosphere. Transition region and coronal heating in these models is due both
the stressing of the magnetic field by photospheric and convection `zone

Red and Blue Shifted Broad Lines in Luminous Quasars
We have observed a sample of 22 luminous quasars, in the range 2.0<z<2.5, at
1.6 microns with the near-infrared (NIR) spectrograph FSPEC on the Multiple
Mirror Telescope. Our sample contains 13 radio-loud and 9 radio-quiet objects.
We have measured the systemic redshifts z_(sys) directly from the strong [O
III]5007 line emitted from the narrow-line-region. From the same spectra, we
have found that the non-resonance broad H lines have a systematic mean
redward shift of 520+/-80 km/s with respect to systemic. Such a shift was not
found in our identical analysis of the low-redshift sample of Boroson & Green.
The amplitude of this redshift is comparable to half the expected gravitational
redshift and transverse Doppler effects, and is consistent with a correlation
between redshift differences and quasar luminosity. From data in the
literature, we confirm that the high-ionization rest-frame ultraviolet broad
lines are blueshifted ~550-1050 km/s from systemic, and that these velocity
shifts systematically increase with ionization potential. Our results allow us
to quantify the known bias in estimating the ionizing flux from the
inter-galactic-medium J_(IGM) via the Proximity Effect. Using redshift
measurements commonly determined from strong broad line species, like Ly\alpha
or CIV1549, results in an over-estimation of J_(IGM) by factors of ~1.9-2.3.
Similarly, corresponding lower limits on the density of baryon Omega_b will be
over-estimated by factors of ~1.4-1.5. However, the low-ionization MgII2798
broad line is within ~50 km/s of systemic, and thus would be the line of choice
for determining the true redshift of 1.0<z<2.2 quasars without NIR

A Generalization of the Kepler Problem
We construct and analyze a generalization of the Kepler problem. These
generalized Kepler problems are parameterized by a triple
where the dimension is an integer, the curvature is a real
number, the magnetic charge is a half integer if is odd and is 0 or
1/2 if is even. The key to construct these generalized Kepler problems is
the observation that the Young powers of the fundamental spinors on a punctured

Spatiotemporal Dependency of Age-Related Changes in Brain Signal Variability
Recent theoretical and empirical work has focused on the variability of network dynamics in maturation. Such variability seems to reflect the spontaneous formation and dissolution of different functional networks. We sought to extend these observations into healthy aging. Two different data sets, one EEG (total n = 48, ages 18-72) and one magnetoencephalography (n = 31, ages 20-75) were analyzed for such spatiotemporal dependency using multiscale entropy (MSE) from regional brain sources. In both data sets, the changes in MSE were timescale dependent, with higher entropy at fine scales and lower at more coarse scales with greater age. The signals were parsed further into local entropy, related to information processed within a regional source, and distributed entropy (information shared between two sources, i.e., functional connectivity). Local entropy increased for most regions, whereas the dominant change in distributed entropy was age-related reductions across hemispheres. These data further the understanding of changes in brain signal variability across the lifespan, suggesting an inverted U-shaped curve, but with an important qualifier. Evidence for a Black Hole and Accretion Disk in the LINER NGC 4203
We present spectroscopic observations from the Hubble Space Telescope that
reveal for the first time the presence of a broad pedestal of Balmer-line
emission in the LINER galaxy NGC 4203. The emission-line profile is suggestive
of a relativistic accretion disk, and is reminiscent of double-peaked transient
Balmer emission observed in a handful of other LINERs. The very broad line
emission thus constitutes clear qualitative evidence for a black hole, and
spatially resolved narrow-line emission in NGC 4203 can be used to constrain
its mass, with M_BH less than 6 x 10^6 solar masses at 99.7% confidence. This
value implies a ratio of black-hole mass to bulge mass of less than
approximately 7 x 10^-4 in NGC 4203, which is less by a factor of ~3 - 9 than
the mean ratio obtained for other galaxies. The availability of an independent
constraint on central black-hole mass makes NGC4203 an important testbed for
probing the physics of weak active galactic nuclei. Assuming M_BH near the
detection limit, the ratio of observed luminosity to the Eddington luminosity
is approximately 10^-4. This value is consistent with advection-dominated
accretion, and hence with scenarios in which an ion torus irradiates an outer
accretion disk that produces the observed double-peaked line emission.
Follow-up observations will make it possible to improve the black-hole mass

Parametric ordering of complex systems
Cellular automata (CA) dynamics are ordered in terms of two global
parameters, computable {\sl a priori} from the description of rules. While one
of them (activity) has been used before, the second one is new; it estimates
the average sensitivity of rules to small configurational changes. For two
well-known families of rules, the Wolfram complexity Classes cluster
satisfactorily. The observed simultaneous occurrence of sharp and smooth
transitions from ordered to disordered dynamics in CA can be explained with the

Evolution of optically faint AGN from COMBO-17 and GEMS
We have mapped the AGN luminosity function and its evolution between z=1 and
z=5 down to apparent magnitudes of . Within the GEMS project we have
analysed HST-ACS images of many AGN in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South,
enabling us to assess the evolution of AGN host galaxy properties with cosmic
